Artist Beware

Scammers are currently using various Artist Registries to perpetuate scams. The scammer will start with an E-mail inquiring about the cost to purchase a work of art from the artist, they often are vague as to exactly which work of art they are interested in. Generally they will ask for a quick response stating it is a birthday gift for the wife or husband. Typically the e-mail used is a Yahoo, Google or some other e-mail account provider which does not require personal information to set up an account.

Should you reply to this inquiry you will typically receive an e-mail back stating they will be sending you a money order or Certified check as payment for the sculpture and that there is extra funds added to cover the cost of shipping, they will request that you send them your mailing address (they do not want P.O. Boxes) they then further state to cash the check or money order and send the difference by Money Gram or Western Union to their supposed shipper. This is the scam part as the money order or check is counterfeit.

Just read your E-mails carefully and Beware of Any that state they are including extra funds for their own personal carrier or that request that you send money in advance for a independent pick up service. We have had some e-mail that resembled a scam that were serious client who wanted to purchase art. When in doubt reply asking for their contact information and phone number so you can call them in person and discuss details further; generally when you do that( if it is a scammer) you will hear nothing back from them.

Do not hesitate to forward a copy of any e-mail you suspect to be a scam to the State Attorney Generals office and also to the company providing the e-mail account like Yahoo or Google, they don’t like scammers either.
